Philomena

Last night Sherry and I watched the movie Philomena.  It is a true story about a woman who had a child out of wedlock in the mid-twentieth century in Ireland.  She was forced to work in a convent and her child was taken from her by the convent and sold to a wealthy couple in America.  It isn't a happy tale but it is a story that needed telling.  I am glad we watched it.

It is a reminder to me that religion and the baggage that goes with it can have a terrible impact on the human soul.  People do the craziest things in the name of religion.  The medical profession's first rule of thumb is 'first, do no harm.'  Religion needs to follow that rule as well.

Peace,
Deacon Fred
